Medhavi Skills University, the first Skill University in Sikkim which provides outcome-based education and broadens the horizon of the students organised a skill challenge for the students, starting from 16th of March to 22nd of March, 2023, wherein, all the students participated.
The English Department conducted two rounds of competition in the challenge. In the first round, the students competed against each other on the basis of two modules. Module ‘A’ dealt with Listening and Writing skills while Module ‘B’ dealt with Reading and Speaking. The students were marked keeping in mind the listed criterion for each module. As a result, three or in some cases four winners were announced. Skill challenge is a mode to measure whether the level of challenge students experienced in their learning is appropriate to their level of ability. However, challenge and ability are critical for intellectual engagement in learning. And, it was astonishing how some of the students could bring forth an impressive blend of challenge and ability which took them to the final round of the skill challenge.
Finally, twenty-four students were announced as the finalists and the final round of the skill challenge was held on 23rd march, 2023 at the seminar hall. At first, each finalist was given a different video which they watched for a stipulated time, and scribbled notes for reference. In the second step, the finalists produced a summary from the notes they have made while watching the video. Thirdly, they expressed their understanding of the topic by speaking in front of the judges and the audiences. After a tough and exciting competition three winners were declared.
